General

How can I get more involved with the RSTF?

Thanks for the interest! Beyond attending our quarterly meetings and signing up for our listserv and this Bang the Table page, you can also volunteer for an action item that will help move the needle on traffic safety in the region. More details about action items can be found below.

    When are meetings?

Meetings are quarterly and generally occur in March, June, September, and December.

What can I expect at an RSTF meeting?

Each of our RSTF meetings highlight guest speakers who present on topics that align with that meeting's Safe System Approach theme. In breakout groups, we discuss reactions to presentations and brainstorm potential action items that address transportation safety in the region. We also provide updates on safety legislation and DVRPC and regional safety-related projects. More detailed agendas are announced closer to the meeting date.

Due to the pandemic, RSTF meetings are conducted virtually. We may in the future switch to a hybrid format. Meetings are typically 2 hours long.

Where can I find past meeting materials?

You can find previous meeting agendas, minutes, presentation slides, and recordings here.

What is the Safe System Approach?

Whereas traditional road safety strives to modify human behavior and prevent all crashes, the Safe System approach refocuses transportation system design and operation on anticipating human mistakes and lessening impact forces to reduce crash severity and save lives.

There are six principles and five elements of the Safe System approach. The principles are shown in the graphic below, encircling the five Safe System elements.

Co-Chairs

    What is a co-chair?

Co-chairs are responsible for helping DVRPC staff facilitate and plan RSTF meetings. This involves brainstorming meeting themes and guest speakers, facilitating breakout group discussions, and presenting some meeting materials. DVRPC staff tries their best to make sure this role is not a burden for those who accept the position!

There are two co-chairs total, representing Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

How long is a co-chair term?

Co-chairs serve for two year terms.

How do I nominate someone to be a co-chair?

Once we put out the call, submit your nominations to Kevin Murphy at kmurphy@dvrpc.org. Feel free to nominate yourself, if you are interested!

Action Items

    What is an action item?

    An action item is:

    • A discrete task that an RSTF member can volunteer for
    • Can be as simple as making a connection between two organizations or researching an issue
    • Something new (not something that is already part of your current workload), but manageable
    • Will help move the needle on traffic safety in the region

Can I work on an action item with someone else?

    Absolutely!

What kind of support will DVRPC offer?

Feel free to ask us to schedule a call to discuss the goals and intentions of an action item, be introduced to helpful connections, and/or get help finding resources that may aid the completion of the action item.

What do I do once my action item is finished?

Thanks for taking the time and effort to help address traffic safety in the region! Please contact Kevin Murphy (kmurphy@dvrpc.org) with any relevant materials to update the RSTF on your action item completion. We will highlight your efforts at the next RSTF meeting and publish results here on this webpage.
