What is the Safe Routes to School in Pottstown Area Project?
Our team at the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) is collaborating with the Pottstown Metropolitan Regional Planning Committee (PMRPC) to design safer pedestrian and bicycle routes for several schools in the Pottstown area. During this study, we will be developing recommendations and concept designs for improvements to bicycle and pedestrian safety for students based on identified concerns from school staff, parents, and students. Information gathered by our team will then be used to help the school district or municipality to apply for Safe Routes to School funding. The final Safe Routes to School in Pottstown report will include:
Geographic and safety analysis of barriers to walking and biking to school
Public engagement of parents and students on their concerns walking and biking to school
School-specific concept designs
Here’s how you can participate!
We have just closed our public participation survey. Please sign up to follow the project, if you'd like to be updated on any project updates.

Future discussions between the municipality and schools should determine which organizations are responsible for completing the application and providing engineering and final design of the project. Safe Routes to School projects are funded through Pennsylvania’s Transportation Alternatives Set Aside (TASA) program, which typically accepts applications every two years. More information about applying for TASA and Safe Routes to School is available on the PennDOT website. While applicants/project sponsors do not have to provide matching funds, they must pay for project design, pre-construction permits, clearances, etc.
